Vintage Staffordshire commemorative plate featuring the Home of Mary, Mother of George Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Produced in England in classic red transferware with floral border and detailed interior vignettes. Measures approx. 10". A collectible piece of American history and Staffordshire pottery, ideal for display or collectors of Washington
This Staffordshire commemorative plate depicts the Home of Mary Ball Washington (1708–1789), mother of George Washington, located in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Mary Washington’s home has long been celebrated as a place of national importance, symbolizing the maternal influence on America’s first president. The estate was preserved in the early 20th century through the efforts of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, ensuring its history would be remembered.
The plate’s center scene shows Mary Washington’s home, framed by lush trees and 18th-century gardens, with additional vignettes including the boxwood gardens planted by Washington himself and a parlor interior. Surrounding the central image is a richly decorated floral transfer border in deep red, a hallmark of Staffordshire’s mid-20th-century commemorative wares.
These plates were produced in England exclusively for American preservation groups and historical societies during the early-to-mid 1900s. They were sold as fundraising items and souvenirs, connecting collectors to both English ceramic artistry and American Revolutionary heritage. Today, they remain prized not only for their beauty but also for their strong link to Colonial history, Washington family legacy, and the early preservation movement in the United States.
A highly desirable addition for collectors of Staffordshire, Americana, presidential memorabilia, or historic landmark pottery.
